About the GED Mathematical Reasoning

The GED Mathematical Reasoning test is one of four subject tests in the GED battery. It runs 115 minutes and consists of approximately 46 questions across two parts: Part 1 (about 5 questions) is a short no-calculator section, and Part 2 (about 41 questions) permits the TI-30XS Multiview calculator. The test uses a mix of multiple-choice, dropdown, fill-in-the-blank, and drag-and-drop question formats on the computer. Content is divided into two broad areas: Quantitative Problem Solving (approximately 45%) and Algebraic Problem Solving (approximately 55%). Quantitative topics include fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and proportions, area and perimeter of basic shapes, surface area and volume, and interpreting data from tables and graphs. Algebraic topics include solving linear equations and inequalities, graphing lines, systems of equations, quadratic expressions, and basic functions. The passing score is 145 out of 200. Students who narrowly missed passing often struggle with word problems requiring multi-step reasoning — recognizing which operation to use is tested as much as computation. The GED opens doors to community college, vocational training, and many entry-level professional jobs.
