The testing effect — or retrieval practice — is probably the most well-replicated finding in cognitive psychology. Pulling information out of memory strengthens the neural pathways associated with that knowledge far more than reading it again does. Every time you answer a practice question, you're forcing your brain to do the same work it will need to do on exam day. That difficulty is the point.
Spaced repetition compounds this effect. If you take a practice quiz today, review the questions you missed, then return to those topics in two days and again in five, you encode the material at a fundamentally deeper level than cramming permits.
