Since 2024, the SAT has been a digital adaptive test that you'll complete in about 2 hours and 14 minutes. The test is scored on a scale of 400–1600 and consists of two main sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. Tip 1: Take a Diagnostic and Own Your Data

Spend 2 hours taking a full-length SAT Math section under realistic conditions. Don't rush; don't peek at answers. When you're done, analyze every single question you missed, even the ones you skipped because you ran out of time. What was the reason? Concept gap, careless error, or timing pressure?

Make a spreadsheet: problem number, topic, reason missed, difficulty level. This data is gold. It shows you exactly where to focus for the next month.

Tip 2: Focus Ruthlessly on Your Top Three Weak Topics

You don't have time to review everything. The diagnostic will reveal your three biggest problem areas. Let's say it's: (1) exponent rules, (2) word problems involving systems of equations, (3) geometry with coordinates. Spend 80% of your next 30 days on these three topics. Your goal is to go from frustration to proficiency.

Ignore areas where you already do well. That's not where the points are hiding.

Tip 3: Do Timed, Focused Drills (Not Full Tests)

Don't spend your 30 days taking full-length tests. That's inefficient when you're targeting weak spots. Instead, do daily drills: spend 15 minutes solving 8–10 problems on your weakest topic, with a time limit. This builds both accuracy and speed on the exact questions that are costing you points.

After you finish, review every problem, whether you got it right or wrong. Did you understand the concept? Was your arithmetic clean? Were you rushing?

Tip 4: Learn Desmos Inside and Out

The digital SAT gives you Desmos for every Math question. If you haven't spent serious time learning it, do that now. Watch a 10-minute YouTube tutorial. Practice graphing equations, solving systems by intersection, and visualizing word problems. This isn't cheating; it's using your tools.

Students who leverage Desmos effectively score higher because they can verify answers and understand problems visually.

Tip 5: Create a Personal Formula Sheet

The SAT provides some formulas, but not all of them. Create your own sheet of formulas, theorems, and rules that you personally struggle with. Is it the quadratic formula? Distance formula? Exponent rules? Write them all down with one example for each. Review this sheet for 5 minutes every morning.

By day 30, you won't need to look it up anymore—it will be in your head.

Tip 6: Practice Under Realistic Time Pressure

Your drills should have a timer. If you're doing 10 problems in 15 minutes, you're practicing the speed the SAT requires. Don't do untimed practice—it doesn't prepare you for the real exam. Speed and accuracy both matter, and the only way to build speed is to practice fast.

Tip 7: Review is More Important Than Practice

Doing 50 problems and ignoring your mistakes will not improve your score. Doing 20 problems and reviewing every single one will. Spend at least as much time reviewing as you spend solving. For every problem you miss, ask: (1) What concept was this testing? (2) Did I forget a rule? (3) Did I make a careless error? (4) Was it a timing issue?

You're not trying to memorize problems; you're trying to understand why you're missing them and fix that pattern.

Tip 8: Identify and Eliminate Your Careless Mistakes

Track careless mistakes separately from concept gaps. If you're forgetting negative signs, setting up problems wrong, or misreading what's being asked, that's addressable. These mistakes often cost 10–20 points.

If you notice you always mess up fractions, slow down specifically on fraction problems. If you miss word problems when you're tired, practice them at the end of your study session. Small, targeted interventions add up.

Tip 9: Take One Full Test Every 10 Days

While most of your time should be spent on focused drills, take a full-length test every 10 days to track progress and get comfortable with the format. This is your "report card." If you've improved, keep doing what you're doing. If you haven't, adjust your strategy.

The test also helps you practice pacing and dealing with test anxiety.

Tip 10: Get Sleep and Manage Your Stress

This sounds obvious, but students who cram late into the night don't improve as much as those who study consistently with adequate sleep. Your brain needs sleep to consolidate what you've learned. If you're studying for 4 hours at night and sleeping 4 hours, you're wasting your time.

Study during the day when your brain is fresher. Get 7–8 hours of sleep. Do something you enjoy for 30 minutes a day to manage stress. A focused, rested brain outperforms a burned-out one every single time.
