Azure AI Engineer Associate: What to Know Before You Start

7 min read

What You Need to Know Before Starting Azure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102)

The Azure AI Engineer Associate certification validates your ability to implement AI solutions using Azure AI services. This is an associate-level credential, meaning it sits above fundamentals but below expert/specialist level. It's designed for engineers with some development experience who are new to Azure's AI platform.

Exam Specifications at a Glance

The AI-102 exam costs $165. You'll answer 40 to 60 questions in 120 minutes. The passing score is 700 out of 1,000. This is a multiple-choice and multiple-select exam delivered online or at a testing center.

Core Skills Tested

The certification tests your ability to work with several Azure AI services:

  • Azure AI Services: Computer Vision (image classification, object detection, OCR), Language services (sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, language detection), and Speech services (speech-to-text, text-to-speech).
  • Knowledge Mining: Azure Cognitive Search and how to build search solutions that understand human language.
  • Conversational AI: Azure Bot Service and QnA Maker for building chatbots and question-answering bots.
  • Document Intelligence: Extracting and analyzing structured data from documents.
  • Responsible AI: Understanding bias, fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI systems.

Prerequisites and Who Should Take It

You should have basic programming knowledge in Python, C#, or JavaScript. Familiarity with REST APIs and JSON is helpful. You don't need to be an ML expert—this certification assumes you're learning Azure AI services for the first time but can code.

Study Time and Preparation

Most candidates prepare for 3-6 weeks. The best approach is hands-on: create a free Azure account, use the $200 free credits, and build projects using each AI service. Read the official AI-102 study guide and take practice exams. Work through at least three real projects: an image classification app, a chatbot, and a document analysis solution.

Official Learning Path

Microsoft provides a free official learning path at learn.microsoft.com/en-us/credentials/certifications/azure-ai-engineer. Follow this path in order. Each module includes hands-on exercises in the Azure sandbox environment. This is your primary study resource.

Verification: The AI-102 exam specifications and Azure AI services listed reflect 2026 information. Always verify current exam content and service availability at the official Microsoft Azure certification page.
